The thin strands of glass are very strong but, by themselves, are like strands of haor or fiberglass insulation. The resin binds the strands together to make a solid substance and to take advantage of the strength of the glass fibers. There are even kits to make your own fiberglass composite consisting of fiberglass fabric and a two part epoxy.
