Elementary education major help!?

Does anyone else ever feel NOT VERY confident with math curriculum for elementary education? I know, I know math for the elementary child is easy and is addition, subtraction, multiplication, division but there are so many other aspects of a math for 1-6 grades. I have always grasped math concepts in the classes that I learned them but never did I keep them with me and now that I will be graduating soon I need to re-learn everything including prime, composite numbers, dividing fractions, decimals as well as multiplying them as well as the distributive properties and more…. I DO NOT REMEMBER THESE AT ALL!!! i would have to go back into elementary school days to really know how math was because I know I could do it easily then… But all the little math details I get nervous for and forget how to do them…..does anyone going into the education field find themselves getting nervous to teach math or feeling they need to go back and re-learn all the math curriculum that is needed????

I have a math degree, so I never had that problem with math specifically, but I was a substitute teacher for a few years and would get called in to teach things like Chemistry and being a sub, I wouldn’t have any idea what I was going to be teaching that day, so I couldn’t prepare at all. I found that it all came back pretty quickly after looking through the student’s textbook. I’m sure if you have problems, your fellow teachers will be willing to help or there are places you can take basic math courses (some community colleges offer them and some adult ed programs have them) if you really start struggling.

It is quite normal to be nervous about that. However, in my experience the teacher guide books for math are quite good and will give you all the information you need, even about topics you have forgotten. And when you see the information again, you will soon get comfortable with it.

I work at a Junior High and I still find myself reteaching myself the math and learning it from other teachers or students. You are only human and might make a mistake every now and then but as long as you learn it before you teach it, you should be okay. Good Luck!!
