Easy to remember composite material?

January 15th, 2010 | by admin |

I need to know some easy to remember composite materials, so far I’ve got fibreglass and concrete, what else are some good ones. I need this information for an exam.

Composite materials are made up of at least 2 different materials, with one serving as the matrix and one serving as the reinforcement. There are many different types: polymer matrix composite (MMC), metal matrix composite (PMC), fiber reinforced polymers (FRP), etc.

Some examples are fiberglass in polymer, carbon fiber in polymer, plywood, natural wood, bone, tungsten carbide with cobalt matrix (for drill bits).

Metal alloys are not composites. Although alloys may exist in more than one phase, no distinct material boundaries can be seen beyond the particle level. In composites, both materials are separate an distinct on the macroscopic level.

there are plenty of alloys (bronze, all kind of steel/magnesium/aluminum etc.), plywood (mix of wood and glue) etc.
