First of all, the story is inconsistent. It first says "Sylvia opened the oven door" and then it says "...but this time Sylvia wasn't near the oven".... So, i don't trust the story. However, without some precautions all dishwares can and do explode. So handle everything with care. And while opening the oven door, stay as far as possible, cause the heat can harm your eyes, and i take out the baked goods at least 30 second after I open the oven door.
References :
True. I haven't had any glass dishes explode in the oven, but I have lost one or two over the years by setting the hot dish on a wet or cold surface.
References :
http://www.snopes.com/food/warnings/pyrex.asp

Snopes.com is a good place to check out urban myths before you clog up others' inboxes with ridiculous stories.

Very long story to relay a common occurrence. There is no safe cookware, so I'll continue to use my pyrex and corningware. Been doing that for 20 years with old and new stuff. Teflon and aluminum will kill you. Glassware breaks and explodes. Don't know what that new silicone stuff does. Here's a website that further discusses cookware and tells you about something new that is SOOOO much better for you?!

I use Pyrex baking/storage/microwave dishes all the time -- including ones that were bought in the past few years. The key is to make sure that the glass is not of a much different temperature than the place where you are putting it. I learned the hard way, though not as dramatically as the story you tell, that extreme changes in temperature do cause it to break. (I put a hot pie dish into a sink that had cold water in it and it broke into a few pieces.) I could not live without my Pyrex measuring cups, pie plates and storage/reheat boxes. The convenience is worth a little extra effort. If you have a cold or room temperature dish, just put it in some warm water for a few minutes and that is sufficient to prevent breakage. Good luck!
References :
Yes, I do know that you have to use pyrex properly or it will shatter or explode. You can't use it on direct heat and you shouldn't subject it to sudden changes in temperature. Myself, like you have not had to deal with this problem.
References :
I've not seen this, but find it scary.

I don't know what I'll do with all my Pyrex
