I suppose even plain concrete is a composite of sorts, but steel reinforced concrete is clearly a composite and is used in huge quantifies in building structures.
There is some use of more "high tech" composites, like fiberglass reinforced plastic. And even for some seismic retrofit applications exotic stuff like Kevlar ...

Why do aircraft makers deviate from the good old aircraft aluminium and wooden fabric materials. If the wheel isn't broken why fix it ?

The B787 is made from composite materials. Just like in metals, fatigue cracks are expected to occurr and must be repaired.
Am no expert in composite structures, but do know that carbon fiber components are nearly fatigue proof, and do not experience fatigue damage as do metal structures. The composites ...
