Do you think the latest carbon mandate foreshadows similar legislation for planes? Is avgas on the way out?

Recently the auto industry was forced to increase the average mileage to a certain MPG figure which I can’t remember. Coupling that with an article I read in P&P a while back about a diesel-powered Skylane which posits that Avgas is on the way out, and with the new 787 using GEnx engines and carbon-fiber composite body, do you think a similar mandate might be passed for planes in the not too distant future, and that avgas may indeed be phased out despite all the GA pilots who currently depend on it?

only if obama stays in there with polosi and reid

Here is an active discussion about aviation fuels, use of auto fuel, ethanol in auto fuel and the reality of loosing AVgas because of the lead content. (BTW avgas [100LL] is not jet fuel [ Jet A ]

Someday avgas will be phased out, no doubt, but not in the near future. The manufacturers don’t actually want to make it because the profit-margin on such low-volume production is slim. It’s actually an annoyance for them to produce. There is a synthetic substitute in the works: http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2010/01/11/336927/clean-avgas-substitute-aims-for-summer-approval.html Google "avgas substitute". Lots of interesting material.
